September Harvest

For supper last night we had a tomato salad, roasted okra, roasted potatoes and fresh cantaloupe.

We’re still getting a few watermelons and eggplant. The late planting of green beans are now ready to start picking, and the October beans aren’t far behind.

And we’re already harvesting the thinnings in the fall garden. We’ll probably have our first stir fry of the season tonight.

Even between seasons, it’s a great time of year for seasonal eating.

  1. It’s also great to eat something you grew in your own garden/on your farm.

Bill, sounds like you are still harvesting enough to keep the table filled with delightful things from the garden. Mine is done for this year. I don’t think I’m going to get the Fall garden planted. The weather is just weird here and the middle 40s at night is on a regular basis. I still have tomatoes on the vine but with those low temperatures they most likely won’t ripen very well.

Have a great September harvest stir fry.

Yep we’ve still got lots of great stuff coming in. I love fall gardening–hardly any bugs or weeds, rarely any need to irrigate, don’t have to work in stifling heat. Unfortunately the deer pressure increases in the fall as they seem to especially like fall veggies.

Wish I could grow okra, I think it has to do with my soil pH. Need to give this some thought.

I don’t know about any special PH requirements for okra. It thrives in hot dry weather. We cut way back on the amount we grow and I still have more than I know what to do with! Hope you get it figured out.

That’s one healthy dinner, I must say. I will eat some meat on your behalf to balance it out.

  5. Too funny Bill! We are now just coming into high season for harvesting: for putting up pickles, canning and throwing stuff in the freezer: ) replanting cool season crops and wondering about putting in next year’s garlic… Hasn’t been much of a Summer here and overnight temps have dropped far too suddenly ):

We’ve been having stir fries for most of the summer. Salads just haven’t looked that appealing for most of the year 😀
