Happy Thanksgiving

What a great reason for a holiday–gratitude.

It is fitting that a day devoted to being thankful should be centered on food. May we all enjoy meals today that are worthy of celebration.

Every item of food we’ll consume today has a story. Maybe it would be helpful to think for a few moments about those stories. Are they stories we’re pleased to be a part of?

I know it’s tempting to deliberately avoid thinking about that. We worry that thinking about the stories behind our food might reduce our pleasure in eating it (a pleasure many of us seek to preserve at all costs). I’m convinced that there are lots of people whose hearts are telling them to eat ethically, yet they’re resisting because they fear doing so would take away the joy of eating. Here’s how I respond to that in Organic Wesley:

Neither should we be discouraged by the fear that eating better will make us unhappy. Many people wrongly assume that eating well means self-deprivation, such as never again eating dessert, having to permanently give up favorite foods, or feeling hungry all the time. But in fact, as many who have begun this journey can attest, persons who replace unhealthy diets with diets of nutritious and ethically-sourced food tend not only be healthier, but also to feel better and to find that they appreciate and enjoy food more than they ever have before. The image of a healthy ethical eater as a sour monkish figure, subsisting on lentils and carrot sticks, simply does not match the reality of a life enriched by enjoying the pleasures and satisfaction that come from good food. Chances are you know someone who is cheerfully living a healthy lifestyle, and who enjoys a diet of good food. Look to that person for inspiration, rather than to food-snobs or some stereotype you may have in mind. Remember too that if you are persuaded that a diet of ethically-sourced nutritious food, eaten in moderation, is part of God’s desire for your life, then you should expect God’s favor and blessing as you sincerely, diligently and prayerfully seek to make the necessary changes in your life. If you ask for a fish, you will not be given a snake.

My hope is that we will all celebrate our day of thanksgiving with a delicious feast of good food.

    Bill, Thanksgiving is a time when I reflect on all the things that I’m thankful for. I look back over the year and see how God’s blessing has truly been on me through it all and am very humbled by it. Some times I sit and think about all the people behind a meal that I’m about to eat. One that has much commercially raised food is especially filled with hundreds of people to produce the food on the table. Even locally raised food has spices that were grown by some one and transported to the store, stocked on the shelf, and rang up my the cash register person. One of the first international trade items to be transported to this country was spices. They still rank pretty high for import items. My staple is coffee. I couldn’t buy it locally even if I tried. Most of all I’m thankful for a God who designed everything for creation (including mankind) to enjoy.

    Jane’s review was right on the money. It was a very nice review with many good points. It makes it even better that she is a minister.

      Wouldn’t it be fascinating if we could visualize every human being and animal that was someone involved in getting a meal to our plate. I’m guessing for most of us that would be hundreds, probably thousands of people. But a generation ago how many people would that have been? How about two generations ago? Definitely food for thought.

    Thank you for continuing to put the information and real food out there.
    The G.O. and I are the proof that it works and how it works. We’re middle aged people of country & farming origins, we thought we knew about eating good food. Not huge consumers of junk or rubbishy food. Before a farmers market was established in our city neighbourhood just over six years ago we did what everyone else did; shopped at supermarkets, the local greengrocer, ate out regularly and occasionally ate fast food. At first my farmers market shopping netted us extras, special occasion and nice things but before long we compared it with what we were eating from the supermarket and realised we’d lapsed into assuming what the supermarkets offered was the best of it. What a surprise when we started to question the status quo. It likely would have taken us much longer to do so if there’d been no tangible evidence in the form of real food available to us.
    Last weekend we had other plans and missed the farmers market so resorted to the supermarket for the best (and not inexpensive) least amount of food shopping that would get us through the week. We also ate out with friends for lunch, and both of us felt awful afterwards. Nothing wrong with the food per se but it was bulk purchased catering food. What an underwhelming eating week it’s been…
    I just want people to know they have the power to make a difference, and like we are, they will be grateful when they are better informed and make better choices.

      Well said EllaDee. That’s how I feel too. If people are well-informed, yet still prefer to eat industrial food, then of course that should be their right. But the industrial food complex is spending mountains of money on advertising designed to keep people misinformed. I refuse to believe that people are consciously choosing inferior food. Most just don’t know better and I believe most people would do the right thing if they understood what’s at stake. So, for better or worse, I’m going to keep beating the drum!

      It was a great Thanksgiving. We had a large family gathering with lots of delicious homecooked food at my mother’s house on a beautiful afternoon. It doesn’t get much better than that.
