Challenges

This rediscovery of nature can never be at the cost of the freedom and responsibility of human beings who, as part of the world, have the duty to cultivate their abilities in order to protect it and develop its potential. If we acknowledge the value and the fragility of nature and, at the same time, our God-given abilities, we can finally leave behind the modern myth of unlimited material progress. A fragile world, entrusted by God to human care, challenges us to devise intelligent ways of directing, developing and limiting our power.

From Laudato Si: On the Care of Our Common Home

Bill, Mmmm, I’m not so sure that nature is that fragile. I am against the pillaging of the earth’s resources at the rate we are consuming them. I believe that if civilization were suddenly gone, the earth would reset itself and be just fine. It may take a quite awhile but then maybe not. We saw the great gulf oil spill correct itself in a very short time and not decades like it was thought. Nature is resilient and can recover from just about any thing. Volcanoes have erupted and blocked out the sun; magnetic poles have switched; asteroids have hit the earth; and yet here we are still surviving. I’m not an advocate by any means for the the greedy way the earth and its resources have been treated but nature has been around a long time and survived many disasters.

Have a great rediscovery of nature day.

Good point. Nature will survive no matter what we do. You’re right that nature is not fragile. But ecosystems are fragile. By our conduct we can render a beautiful ecosystem inhospitable to us, and lots of other innocent species as well. Francis is operating from the theological perspective that we humans are the pinnacle of creation and are entrusted by the Creator with responsibility for acting as stewards and caretakers of it. Nature probably doesn’t care if that is true or not. She will soldier on no matter what we do.
