Well said. Dixie lived a long and happy life. She had developed a tumor in her head and her time to leave had come. She went gracefully and peacefully.
I’ve had to put down many animals in my time, many of whom I’d grown very attached to. This was the first time we’d been through it with a pet, and we had it done at a vet’s office (for reasons which seemed correct to us). I have always been fond of Dixie, but she and Cherie had a special bond. As difficult as it was to lose Dixie, what was most heartbreaking to me was seeing how heartbroken it made Cherie.
Bill, it’s always tough to let go of our family pets. They become such a part of the family during their lives. My condolences and prayers during this time of loss.
Thanks Dave. Going through it the way we did made it harder, but it was the right thing to do. It will seem very strange not having that cat around any more.
Thanks Jeff. It is sad, but her time had come so I can’t say it was tragic in the way some losses are. After that much time as part of our family, her absence does leave an empty place.
Thanks. That’s very kind of you. Just a few weeks ago we thought we were about to lose our dog, who has been with us 13 years. Even as she made a remarkable recovery, Dixie unexpectedly became ill and our barn cat disappeared. Those kind of things are part of life of course but they do create pain and sense of loss.
Thanks. Dixie had a great life. She was a pampered house cat her entire life. She was especially close to Cherie. It was rare to see one of them without the other. I joked that Dixie was Cherie’s familiar. 16 years is a good long life for a cat. But she will be missed.
Cherie brought her home from the Humane Society when she was a 5 month old kitten. She was our children’s first pet (and for a long time their only pet). She moved with us from Florida to Virginia. In the days when Cherie would sometimes drive to Florida for short visits (while I was still working there) Dixie would ride down with her, then claim command of our condo during her stay. She had a good long happy life and she departed in peace and comfort. We should all hope for that I think.
Thanks for your kind words. She had both–a good life and a good death. She went gently and peacefully, looking into Cherie’s eyes while being stroked and loved.
Yes, thanks for sharing that. As a friend once told me after we lost a dog, we take them into our hearts knowing that they will not outlive us and that we will have to deal with the sadness of their deaths. And so we do, and then we do it again.
Oh, Bill. I’m so sorry. This is such sad news to come home to. Clearly, she was well loved, and loved in return. At times like this, I’m only glad that she had people who put her best interests first, despite the difficulty. Please tell Cherie how sorry I am.
Oh, my eyes fill with tears with the memory of all of the loved companions that have walked with me on my path. All too often, in hopes of just a few more good times, we wait too long at the end, and prolong their suffering. They bear it, mostly with patience and love in their eyes. I’m glad I’m late to this story and that I already know that Mr. Fabulous has returned–the thought of losing both feline companions would be too much.
We waited too long with a pet once and she needlessly suffered as a result. For about a week we’d known that Dixie couldn’t stay with us much longer. On her last day Cherie felt that Dixie was telling her the time had come.
My heart goes out to Cherie and you. Part of the pact with a pet is that we will care for them and not let them suffer. You kept your end of the bargain–love for love.

The decision to be kind to an animal whilst seemingly cruel to ourselves is never easy. Dixie is now at peace.
