The Object

The object of life is not to be on the side of the majority, but to escape finding oneself in the ranks of the insane.

“It is easy in the world to live after the world’s opinion; it is easy in solitude to live after our own; but the great man is he who in the midst of the crowd keeps with perfect sweetness the independence of solitude.”

Bill, I would never call anyone insane but many of the world’s ideas are indeed insane. I’m amazed at what folks actually believe in today’s society. The truth will set us free but today among the white noise of our culture, it’s more than difficult to determine what is the truth. To keep from being swept away by the tides of today’s ideas, my quiet time surrounded by nature must include seeking out spiritual truths on a daily basis.

Have a great object of life day.

I think there’s truth in the simple observation that our object ought not be to just be part of the majority. That’s no guarantee that you won’t end up in the ranks of the insane.

Aurelius may have been saying that just keeping our wits is difficult enough, without regard to whether we’re able to stay in society’s main stream. But I do wonder if some of the things we accept as normal won’t someday be looked back upon as seemingly insane. Certainly we can look back in history now and make that kind of judgment on times past.

“…Freewill, the development of the logical mind, the illusions of the senses, all these tend to extinguish, or at least, to dim, the Light of Divinity. Now I perceive more clearly, for I am no longer cluttered by illusions, that the great purpose of life in matter is to *illumine* matter* with* Spirit*. …”

When it comes to the purpose, meaning or object of life, I suppose there will always be many ways to express it, and I suppose it will always be something that puzzles us.

  4. It’s all too easy to be swept up in half-truths and downright lies, as we witness every day… especially when media operates from dogma as opposed to unbiased reporting. Too bad we don’t have a BS meter to evaluate our various media sources. –Curt
