We’ve had several days of rain, mixed with sleet and snow. It’s an icy, muddy, sloppy mess around here these days.
On a different subject, it seems there’s always something broken down on the farm. The RTV is out of commission with some problem I can’t diagnose and I haven’t been able to get it to the shop. With the RTV out of service I’ve been using the tractor a lot more, and now it’s overheating and I can’t figure out why.
Farmers have to know how to fix things. It comes with the job. It’s just too expensive and time-consuming to take things to the shop every time they break down.
I had plenty of opportunities to learn mechanical skills as I was growing up. My grandfather was a farmer who could fix just about anything that broke down on the farm. My father was an excellent mechanic. They both tried to teach me, but it just didn’t take. I just did what I was told and hurried back to my books as soon as I could. I really regret now that I didn’t pay better attention back then. So now I’m an old dog trying to learn new tricks.
But hopefully not yet too old to still learn a new trick or two.
