Mama Turtle

I discovered this turtle in the road at the barn.  She traveled a long way from home to lay her eggs.

I’m not sure why turtles lay their eggs so far from the pond where they live.  I suspect it’s to keep them safer from predators.  The little hatchlings must have some kind of radar that will guide them to the pond.

We have too many turtles in the pond and some of my fisherman friends tell me I need to get rid of them.

But after all the trouble this mama went to to lay her eggs, I just didn’t have the heart to bother her.  When last seen she was slowly crawling back toward the pond, about 700 yards away.
