It’s a been a very difficult spring for gardening. It’s been cold and wet almost continuously since March and we remain behind in nearly everything. Just when were starting to get caught up it started raining heavily and now our planned summer gardens are muddy messes and will be for a while. Just ahead of the rain I did get the tomatoes, peppers and eggplant planted. But now we’re behind on the beans, melons and squashes. I have the sweet potato slips started, but no garden prepped for them. So it goes.
After the big rain (and it being too muddy to do much of anything else) I thought it was an opportune time to go hunting for morels, or as we called them when I was growing up, hickory chickens.
But alas my poor mushroom hunting performance continued. I found plenty of mushrooms, but no morels.
No morels did not, however, mean no mushrooms for us. Our shiitakes loved the rain too and we’ll be enjoying them soon.
