Not Happy

Every day, around midday, I go to the henhouse to check on things.  I gather the eggs, make sure they have food and water, and generally just have a look around.  It’s something I enjoy doing.

But the past two days I haven’t enjoyed it.  Now two of the three recently hatched chicks are gone.  One went missing two days ago.  I’m not sure what happened to her.  Then yesterday I discovered one of them dead.  Not from a predator, just dead.  I have no idea why.

Sometimes chicks just die.  It happens, but it’s never acceptable to me.  And losing two out of three over two days for no apparent reason leaves me unhappy, to put it mildly.

The remaining chick is scurrying around with her mama, seemingly perfectly healthy.  I’m hoping that if I ever discover another dead or missing chick, it is a long, long time from now.
