As I’ve pointed out often on this blog, 80% of the antibiotics used in this country are adminstered to farm animals. The vast majority of those are being used non-therapeutically. That is they are being given to animals because they have a side effect which stimulates growth and weight gain.
Antibiotics should only be given to animals who are sick. And any so-called farm operation that produces consistently sick animals, such as the confined animal feeding operations characteristic of factory farms, are endangering the health of all of us. Overuse of antibiotics causes mutations and the emergence of antibiotic resistant microbes–potential sources of antibiotic-resistant pandemics.
Of course even without this risk, no one should want to patronize industrial farms producing meat laced with pharmaceuticals.
