It’s that time of the year again. I don’t enjoy deer hunting and I hate killing animals, but since I won’t eat animals I didn’t raise or hunt personally, either I shoot some deer or I go this year without venison.
So far, with only a few weeks left in the season, I have killed no deer. I’ve only been out a few times, so a lot of the blame just lies on me not trying hard enough. And I missed the one easy shot I’ve taken, so that one is on me too.
But I also have to give some credit to the deer. During the off-season I have to shoo them away like flies. Hardly a day goes by that I don’t see lots of them hanging around the farm. But now that it’s time for me to shoot some of them, they seem as scarce as hen’s teeth. I wonder if they’re on to me.
As a great philosopher once said, “It ain’t over till it’s over.” So I’m not ready to concede defeat. But as the season winds down, I’m starting to wonder if I’ll be more vegetarian this year than I intended to be.
Within a half an hour of posting this, I bagged a big buck. So the pressure is off.
