Whenever possible, I like to be barefoot in the garden. I like the feel of the soil beneath my feet.
My friend George was way ahead of his time. He believed in sustainable organic farming back when few others had even heard of it. George also believed strongly in barefoot gardening. He believed that the contact of the gardener’s feet with the soil of the garden was beneficial to both. I have come to believe George was right about that.
Ten years ago, George died tragically. He was only 39 years old. I still miss him and I think of him often. Especially when I’m gardening in my bare feet.
