Trimming Missy’s hooves

In the freshness of the early morning
though there is a weight in the air that betrays the coming heat
it is enough to enjoy birdsongs and a gentle breeze
and to take some small pleasure in a task finally done.

Suspicious and nimble, adept at evasion
she cleverly dodges the usual feints, tricks and traps
until at last a brilliant manuever leaves her cornered
and facing her persistent now-victorious beclippered foe.

And then she stands calmly to receive
the clipping she had tried so long and hard to avoid
looking indifferently as if to say, “O.K. You got me.
Let’s get this over with.”
