Paul wrote his letter to the Thessalonian church (1 Thessalonians in the modern Bible) no later than the year 52, less than 20 years after the resurrection of Jesus. The letter was written many years before the gospels, and is the oldest Christian document in existence.
So in this, the very earliest record we have of the Christian faith, how was Paul advising believers to live?
Make it your ambition to lead a quiet life, to mind your own business and to work with your hands, so that your daily life may win the respect of outsiders and so that you will not be dependent on anybody.
Nearly two thousand years later, that is still very good advice.
